Dale trained at the National School of Ballet in Wellington, and the Australian Ballet School in Melbourne. He danced with the Royal New Zealand Ballet, and was a dancer with the Queensland Ballet for eight years performing lead roles in ballets such as Giselle, Carmen, and Romeo & Juliet.
After retiring as a dancer, Dale was partner in a private dance studio for 15 years, teaching and choreographing for a broad range of students within the community, from early childhood to pre-professional.
Dale completed a Master of Fine Arts at Queensland University of Technology in 1999. In 2003, he completed a PhD in dance education through the School of Education at the University of Queensland, on an Australian Postgraduate Award. His doctoral thesis Dance through a Sociocultural Lens received a Dean’s Commendation for outstanding research. Dale was subsequently awarded a Queensland Creative Fellowship.
